WAAC 2026 Global Photo Competition: A Visual Anthropology Initiative

The World Applied Anthropology Congress (WAAC) 2026 Global Photo Competition invites photographers, researchers, students, artists, and visual storytellers from across the world to document the lived realities of humanity in a rapidly changing world. Organized as part of the World Applied Anthropology Congress 2026 to be held at ICRISAT, Hyderabad, India, from July 24th–26th, 2026, the competition seeks compelling visual narratives that illuminate urgent global concerns such as climate change, migration, ecological degradation, food systems, Indigenous knowledge, labor, health, adaptation, and everyday resilience. The call emphasizes photography not merely as artistic expression, but as a powerful anthropological medium capable of capturing the relationships between people, culture, environment, and social transformation. Through this initiative, the Anthropological Association for Humankind (AAfH) and the Neo-tropical Anthropology Laboratory (NAL), University of Kansas, aim to encourage visual documentation that deepens public understanding of human experiences shaped by environmental, political, and social change.

Participants are invited to submit one to three photographs accompanied by thoughtful captions that contextualize the human stories behind the images. Selected and winning photographs will receive exhibition consideration, certificates, online gallery features, social media recognition, and cash awards for registered WAAC participants. More importantly, the selected works will contribute intellectually and visually to the Hyderabad Declaration on Climate Change and Migration, thereby positioning photography as an instrument of global dialogue, policy reflection, and humanitarian engagement. The competition strongly upholds dignity, informed consent, and ethical visual representation, affirming that photographers retain copyright while granting organizers a non-exclusive promotional license. By bringing together diverse perspectives from around the world, the WAAC 2026 Global Photo Competition aspires to create a meaningful archive of contemporary human realities and inspire deeper interdisciplinary conversations on justice, sustainability, resilience, and the future of humanity.
